Seven Practical Steps in Walking with God
The other week I shared about the phenomenal Biblical testimony of Enoch: Enoch walked with God (Genesis 5:22, 24). Here are some practical steps we can take in walking with God.
1. Start your day with an awareness of the Lord’s presence.
Before anything else, acknowledge God’s presence. A simple prayer: “God, I want to walk with You today—lead me.” Read a short passage of Scripture (even 5–10 minutes).
2. Stay grounded in Scripture (not just reading—applying).
Don’t just read—look for one thing to live out. What does this show me about God? What should I do differently?
3. Talk to God throughout the day.
Think of prayer less like a formal event and more like ongoing conversation. Before decisions: “God, what’s the wise move here?” In stress: “Help me respond well.” In gratitude: “Thank you for that moment” - This builds constant awareness, like walking beside someone and talking as you go.
4. Pay attention to inner nudges of the Holy Spirit.
It is like when you walk with a friend or spouse. If you started to go off path, or step wrongly, they nudge you. These nudges might look like: Conviction: “That attitude isn’t right.” Prompting: “Reach out to that person.” Restraint: “Don’t say that.” That’s what “walking by the Spirit” actually looks like in practice.
5. Practice obedience step-by-step.
Walking is step-by-step—so is obedience. Big spiritual growth comes from small daily decisions.
6. Stay aligned through repentance (course correction).
Walking with God includes adjusting your direction quickly. When you notice: Confess it honestly; Turn from it/Repent; Move forward without staying stuck in guilt.
7. Walk with others.
You’re not meant to walk alone.
Walking with God isn’t about adding more religious tasks—it’s about: Living your normal life with God actively included, influencing your decisions, thoughts, and direction.
Morning: Start walking as you surrender your day to God
During the day: Stay aware, respond to nudges, make aligned choices
Evening: Look back: Where did I walk with God? Where did I drift?
