Summer in the Psalms | Psalm 33 | July 5, 2026
The sermon opens by noting America's 250th birthday and the connection many Founding Fathers (George Washington, John Adams) saw between faith and freedom. The central message is that while we celebrate America's blessings, we ultimately need God's blessing as a nation. Psalm 33 gives three responses every generation of Americans should have toward the one true God.
1. Praise the One True God Who Deserves Worship (Psalm 33:1–9)
How He deserves worship: Joyful shouts, thanksgiving, musical instruments, and new songs of praise (vv. 1–3).
Why He deserves worship: Because of His perfect character — He is upright, faithful, righteous, just, and full of steadfast love (vv. 4–5). And because of His awesome creation — He spoke the heavens into existence by His word (vv. 6–9).
The sermon applies this by saying the greatest need of America is not better politics but greater worship. National renewal begins with renewed worship of God.
2. Trust the One True God Who Rules Nations (Psalm 33:10–17)
The psalm shifts from creation to history:
A. God overrules human plans — He brings the counsel of nations to nothing (v. 10).
B. God's plans never fail — His counsel stands forever (v. 11).
C. A nation's greatest blessing — is to have the Lord as its God (v. 12).
D. God sees every ruler — He looks down from heaven and observes all people (vv. 13–15).
E. False sources of security — armies, warriors, and war horses cannot save (vv. 16–17). Trust must be in God alone, not in military or political power.
3. Hope in the One True God Who Shows Mercy (Psalm 33:18–22)
A. God watches over His people — His eye is on those who fear Him (v. 18).
B. God delivers His people — from death and famine (v. 19).
C. God is our help and shield — we wait for Him (v. 20).
D. God's steadfast love gives hope — we trust in His holy name and hope in His mercy (vv. 21–22).
Closing Application: America's birthday reminds us of political freedom, but Scripture reminds us that our deepest bondage is spiritual, not political. Our ultimate allegiance is to the King whose reign never ends.
