Summer in the Psalms | Psalm 62
This sermon, based on Psalm 62, addresses the deep anxiety prevalent in our modern age—a theme captured by the book The Anxious Generation (2024). David wrote this psalm under intense pressure, facing attacks, threats, and slander. Yet in the chaos, he found stability in God alone.
The central message: In an anxious and unstable world, God invites us to quiet our souls, pour out our hearts, and rest in Him alone. Anxiety tells us everything depends on us; faith reminds us everything rests in God's hands.
1. Rest in God Alone (Psalm 62:1–2)
David opens by declaring, "For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation." He describes God as our Rock (unchanging strength), our Salvation (deliverance), and our Fortress (secure protection). Like a child comforted by a parent during a thunderstorm, we can rest in God's steady character.
2. Speak Hope to Your Own Soul (Psalm 62:5–8)
Repeated trouble requires repeated truth. David preaches to himself: "For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him" (v. 5). He then invites the community to "trust in him at all times" and "pour out your heart before him" (v. 8). God is a refuge for us—not just a personal comfort, but a shared hope.
3. Reject the False Refuges of the World (Psalm 62:9–10)
David warns that both low and high status are "lighter than a breath." Money, power, people, and schemes cannot save. "Set not your heart on them" (v. 10). Love people deeply, but trust God ultimately.
4. Remember That Power and Steadfast Love Belong to God (Psalm 62:11–12)
David closes with two bedrock truths: Power belongs to God—nothing catches Him by surprise, nothing weakens His authority. And Steadfast love belongs to God—He is not only mighty but merciful. The believer is held by two strong hands: God's power and God's love.
The clearest display of both is the cross of Jesus Christ. David ends by saying God "will render to a man according to his work"—and praise God that Jesus is the Man who finished the work of salvation for us.
