Hope For Your Heart | Luke 24:13-35
The sermon "Hope for Your Heart" from Luke 24:13-35 emphasizes that because Jesus is the risen and living Lord, there is hope for every heart. It identifies three types of hearts:
Hopeless Hearts (Luke 24:13-24): This describes the disciples on the road to Emmaus who, despite hearing reports of Jesus's resurrection, felt their hope was lost after His crucifixion. They expressed, "We had hoped that He was the One..." (Luke 24:21). Their eyes were kept from recognizing Jesus as He walked with them, and they were sad and confused by the events in Jerusalem.
Foolish Hearts (Luke 24:25-27): Jesus Himself confronted the disciples, calling them "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!" (Luke 24:25). He then explained from all the Scriptures, beginning with Moses and the Prophets, how it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and enter into His glory (Luke 24:26-27). This highlights a heart that struggles to understand and believe God's Word, even when it points directly to Christ (Isaiah 53:5-6; Luke 9:22). Trusting in the Lord with all your heart and storing up His Word helps guard against foolishness (Proverbs 3:5; Psalm 119:10-11).
Transformed Hearts (Luke 24:28-35): As Jesus broke bread with them, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him before He vanished (Luke 24:30-31). Their hearts, once hopeless and foolish, were transformed, burning within them as He had opened the Scriptures (Luke 24:32). This transformation led them to immediately return to Jerusalem to share the good news that the Lord had truly risen (Luke 24:33-35). This transformation is a drawing near to God with a true heart in full assurance of faith (Hebrews 10:22) and being born again to a living hope through Christ's resurrection (1 Peter 1:3). For those who desire a brand new heart, God promises to remove the heart of stone and give a heart of flesh, placing His Spirit within to enable obedience to His commands (Ezekiel 36:26-27).
