The Empowered Church: On Mission Together | Ephesians 4

The sermon on Ephesians 4:1-16, "An Empowered Church On Mission Together," outlines a vision for the church as it engages in God's mission. It emphasizes three key aspects of this empowered church:

First, an empowered church on mission walks together in unity (Ephesians 4:1-6). This unity is rooted in a shared calling, urging believers to live lives worthy of that calling (Ephesians 4:1). It is also demonstrated through a unified character, marked by humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love, striving to maintain the peace given by the Spirit (Ephesians 4:2-3). Furthermore, this unity is grounded in common convictions: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father over all (Ephesians 4:4-6).

Second, an empowered church on mission serves together in ministry (Ephesians 4:7-12). Every believer has received grace and spiritual gifts according to Christ's measure (Ephesians 4:7-8). Christ, who descended and ascended, gives these gifts (Ephesians 4:9-10). These gifts include apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers, whose purpose is to equip all believers for the work of ministry, building up the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-12).

Third, an empowered church on mission grows together in maturity (Ephesians 4:13-16). This growth leads to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, reaching the full measure of Christ's stature (Ephesians 4:13). Maturity means no longer being easily swayed by false teachings, but instead speaking the truth in love, growing in every way into Christ, who is the head (Ephesians 4:14-15). As each part of the body works properly, the whole body grows and builds itself up in love (Ephesians 4:16). This maturity involves Christlikeness, doctrinal stability, relating well to others, and contributing to the body.
